In 2016, Sandy Knight published a story to her profile in which she freely wondered if she could call herself a real writer. In that story was the fateful line: Give a real writer a writing prompt like “door knob” and they’ll probably slam you with five or six hundred words containing enough creative genius to shame you into shutting your mouth and your computer for a month, at least.”

Half a dozen people took on the challenge and wrote amazing stories about a doorknob.

After reading through those stories and the ensuing discussion, I sent Sandy a private note: “This is great. We should do this every week.” And thus, The Weekly Knob was born; a place by writers for writers to build our creativity and confidence one writing challenge at a time. Neither Sandy nor I dreamed that 5 years later we would have grown into a publication with more than 1500 writers and over 12,000 readers. And we’re still growing.

Many popular writers on Medium today got in their foot in the door through The Weekly Knob and have moved on to even bigger audiences and we’re proud to have been a part of their journey.

In that time, we have seen our writers hone their skills in storytelling. We have cheered writers on as they published first and even second novels, written recommendations for writers who’ve applied for Creative Writing degree programs, and proofed, edited and critiqued thousands of stories.

We have even collectively raised over 6.000 US$ for Covid relieve in association with #Thankmas 2020 and Red Nose Day.

As we rose up from these humble beginnings, two things became undeniable:

  1. Five hundred words was seriously lowballing the creative genius of real writers.
  2. Our name really…sucks.

We have big plans for this little publication, and we won’t be achieving those with a name like Weekly Knob. There’s maybe eight people who understand why we’re called “Knob”. And that wouldn’t be so bad if knob wasn’t also a euphemism for a certain naughty bit.

It’s time we rebranded…

Over the next few weeks we’re very excited to announce TheWeeklyKnob.com will become

Hinged.press

‘Connecting people through story’

That means you will have to send your angry emails about me almost giving you a heart attack to hinged.press@gmail.com

The publication will expand our reach and publishing opportunities, but the core mission will remain the same: inspiring and supporting writers.

We will still put out weekly prompts of common objects and you will still have 6 days to write for them, just like we’ve always done. There will be more exciting news coming out as we finalize plans and shake hands on deals, so watch this space.

Change is coming.
But we’re not going away, we’re swinging the door wide open for what’s to come!

Don’t miss our LAST power prompt as The Weekly Knob!
