The pair shuffled through the trash strewn alley, stopping to dig through any pile that might yield a useful item or two. The late August sun was hot and bright and the girl, Lucy, swayed with sudden dizziness. They were both dressed in frayed denim shorts and faded t-shirts. Sixteen-year-old Lucy pulled her hair off her forehead with a faded red bandana. She wore heavy canvas gloves, the sort a brick layer might put on for work. As she bent to push aside a tumbled…
